Knowledge and attitudes toward human sexuality among graduate students University of Zagreb, School of medicine -a longitudinal study

Introduction Reproductive health addresses the reproductive processes, functions and system at all stages of life and implies that people are able to have a responsible, satisfying and safe sex life. Aim The aim of this study was to compare changes in knowledge and attitudes toward human sexuality among graduate medical students on first and sixth year of study. Subjects and methods The study comprised 242 students (68% girls) on first year and 125 students (74% girls) of the same generation on sixth year of study. The data were collected by anonymous self administrated questionnaire and analyzed with descriptive statistical methods. Results On first year of study sexually active were 41% girls and 47% boys and on sixth 78% girls and 94% boys. Three and more sexual partners reported on first year 10% girls and 21% boys and on sixth 28% girls and 41% boys. Unprotected first sexual intercourse reported more girls on first year 8% than on sixth 3% and 3% boys on both years . Regular use of contraception was reported by more girls on first 65% than on sixth 60% and in 55% boys on both years . Sexually active students thought (completely agree) that condom reduces sexual pleasure more on sixth year, 29% girls and 39% boys, than on first 12% girls and 17% boys. That legal abortion should be stopped thought more girls on sixth 21% than on firs t 15% and more boys on first 23% than on sixth 13%. That sexual education should be part of school curriculum thought 90% girls on first and 94% on sixth and 92% boys only on first year. Conclusions Observed changes in knowledge and attitudes and difference between sexes implies that sexual education should be continuously performed for graduate medical students from first to last year of study.
