Mitochondrial DNA diversity of domesticated endangered pig breeds and wild boar
Black Slavonian pig and Turopolje pig are endangered autochthonous Croatian pig breeds that are still traditional reared in a semi- wild condition. This raises the possibility of hybridization between domestic pigs and wild boar. In this study we analyzed the genetic variability of 348 bp long fragment of mtDNA control region of indigenous Black Slavonian and Turopolje pigs (N=60 ) with wild boar (N=95) in Croatian (Island Mljet, Island Cres, Istra, Lika, Bilogora and Baranja) and Albania. From the gene bank were withdrawn 581 nucleotide sequences of domestic pigs and 291 nucleotide sequences of wild boar. The aims was examined the mitochondrial DNA control region variability and determine how many haplotypes will be found in our indigenous pig breeds. Also, establish common haplotypes of our domestic pigs with wild boar and determine if they share haplotypes with other wild boar populations in Europe. In this study 13 haplotypes were determined in 155 samples, Black Slavonian pigs shared one haplotype with Mangalica pigs and two haplotypes with Berkshire pigs which confirms its origin by crossing this two pig breeds. Black Slavonian and Turopolje pigs share three haplotypes whit Croatian and Albanian wild boar, while wild boar from Croatia and Albania share only one haplotype. Black Slavonian pigs, Turopolje pigs and wild boar from Albania make one own specific haplotype. Black Slavonian pigs shared only one haplotype with Turopolje pigs. Croatian wild boar are classified in an additional three haplotypes which it shares with domestic pigs and European wild boar. Analysis confirmed low level of mitochondrial DNA variability, as well multiple hybridization events in the history of pig domestication.
