Synthetic explorations towards bis-porphyrin host system and study of host-guest interactions
Molecular architectures containing in-built porphyrin components continue to attract attention as host-guest components and in various aspects of energy and electron transfer. Supramolecular systems possessing various flexible and semi-flexible linkers between two porphyrin rings have been synthesized and employed in host-guest studies. Here we report the results of our synthetic efforts to prepare novel space separated bis- porphyrin host system of type 1 (Figure 1)1 which due to the weak non-covalent interactions acts as a molecular receptor for a variety of organic substrates. Molecular tweezers consists of a norbornane bridge that connects porphyrin rings metalated with zinc. This system is more flexible than previously reported bis- porphyrins2, but still directing the functionalities towards the same side of the molecule. For synthetic purpose, modern green chemistry methodologies in particular microwave irradiation3 and high-speed vibrational milling have been employed. Host-guest interactions of synthesized bis-porphyrin 1 and various diamine are studied using UV/vis titrations.
