DEVIANT MANAGEMENT VALUES (DARK TRIAD) BY CROATIAN MANAGEMENT STUDENTS
A family of socially malevolent tendency so called „dark triad“ values recapitulate concepts of narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy. This deviant values are present in human but also in management population and are predictors of bad management because dark triad individuals justify their exploitation of others. Namely, empirical evidence suggest that some managers are cynic, manipulative, egoistic, rapaciously oriented without feelings for others, are aggressive without moral commitment, do not allow smart arguments. Also, having no feelings for others has shown as a main reason for management failure. Dark triad or deviant management values consist of the interpersonal value/variable complex of narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy. Psychopathy depicts managers who impulsive look for excitement, are extremely egoistic and have lack of feelings. Machiavellianism depicts managers who are cynic, undisciplined, believe in personal manipulation as key to success and behave in a way „An end excuse every mean!“. Narcissism depicts managers who are extremely self-directed (egoistical), grandiose, dominant and has manipulative interpersonal orientation. Possibility to measure deviant management values/variables can be very useful in the management selection as important human resource management function. Namely, individuals with extreme values in dark triad variables should not be engaged in management positions because of their high destroying team/organization potential. In order to measure the dark triad values in the future management executives population, this research was conducted in April/May 2013 and included 150 students of professional management study on Faculty of Economics University in Split Croatia, who gave his personal approval for this research. It is used standardized Short dark triad measurement instrument from the authors Jones&Paulhus (2012) who measures the scales of Machiavellianism (9 items), narcissism (9 items) and psychopathy (9 items). The obtained results are compared with the research results and psychometric norms of Jones&Paulhus (2012) on population of 387 students in Canada. One of the interesting results is that Croatia sample were statistically higher in all the measured values of Machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy. To decrease the dark side organizational threat it is proposed four measures which includes: (1) Regrutation and selection ; (2) Workplace condition ; (3) Ethics education and promotion of spirituality management and (4) Employee dark triad awareness and dealing with dark triad personalities.
