Aspergillus ochraceus growth and ochratoxin A accumulation in the presence of dehydroacetic acid
The effect of dehydroacetic acid (DHA) on the growth, and ochratoxin A accumulation by the mould Aspergillus ochraceus NRRL 3145, was studied in yeast - extract - sucrose (YES) medium at pH = 5.5. YES medium was treated with various amounts of cultures at 15 0C, during 15 days. Mycelial dry masses were determined gravimetrically, and ochratoxin A concentrations were quantified fluorodensitometrically using a Camag TLC Scanner. Dehydroacetic acid at 0.1 and 0.2 mmol L-1 stimulated the growth of moulds and ochratoxin A production. A higher concentration at 0.5 mmol L-1 inhibited the mould growth partially, and completely inhibited the ochratoxin A synthesis depending on the time and temeperature of cultivation.
