Sodium Metasilicate for Improvement Cotton Flame Retardancy
Cotton is one of highly flammable materials. In the case of fire it burns strongly and fast representing a major risk for humans and environment. In order to eliminate the use of toxic flame retardants, application of silicone based compounds were recently researched. Silicone based compounds as silicones ; silicates and natural zeolite have excellent thermal stability and high heat resistance with very limited release of toxic gases during the thermal decomposition. It is well known that urea shows synergistic effect with ammonium hydrogen phosphate enhancing the flame retardancy of cotton materials. In this paper the reduction of the concentration of urea and ammonium hydrogen phosphate as well as their synergy with sodium silicate (sodium metasilicate - Na2SiO3, water glass or liquid glass), was researched for the improvement of cotton flame retardancy. Thermal properties of treated cotton fabrics were determined by Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Microscale Combustion Calorimeter (MCC).
