Two examples of database structures in management of engineering data

Two approaches to modelling database structures as the parts of a common research project in modelling the design process and the management of engineering data will be presented and compared. Both systems (structures) are targeted to support the classes of adaptive and variant design. The first presented example is the theoretical model in which every occurrence, kind of action, set of information, relation and other real world “things” from the domain of the design process, are attempted to be modelled as objects. The complex network of relations between design process model entities (mapped to classes and objects) is analysed as a central issue of such approach. Such research aims to model the multi-level relationships between engineering data structures, and a network of sequence relations between design process steps, including the models of iterative processes. The second presented example is the relational database structure for management of product data and design documentation, developed for the design office of electric power transformers factory. The main database structures of the developed system are: ˇ Product structure templates for each of the main functional assemblies. The template is a framework used as the starting point for new projects, including links to product documentation and components specifications; ˇ The catalogue of internal and supplied standard components; ˇ Active project management (design tasks distribution & coordination, data & workflow control, approval procedures); ˇ The archive of previous designs.
