Denitrification with Different Carbon Sources: The Effect of Different C/N Ratios on Denitrification Rate
This study, based on laboratory experiments using batch reactors, presents the results of the effects of different carbon sources: sodium acetate, methanol, and industrial wastewater, as electron donors on denitrification rate. The investigation of denitrification process was carried out with activated sludge from a municipal wastewater treatment plant. Denitrification was performed under anoxic conditions at DO<0.4 mg/L, at 22±2 oC, and at ratios of COD/NO3-N=4.75±0.25, COD/NO3-N=7.25±0.75, and COD/NO3-N=11±1. COD consumption to reduce 1 mg NO3-N was ranging from 4.75 to 12 depending on carbon source. The highest specific denitrification rate was observed with sodium acetate, followed by wastewater, and the lowest with methanol.
