Urogenital infections in Zagreb
Urogenital infections as one of the most common morbidity recorded at primary health care (PHC) in the City of Zagreb are presented. Urogenital infections rank as the fourth most common morbidity diagnosed and treated by general practitioners, family physicians, pediatricians, specialists in school medicine and specialists in occupational medicine. Aim was to determine the magnitude of the problem from the aspect of primary health care, where these infections are most commonly diagnosed and managed. The analysis included seven consecutive years (2000-2006), with special reference to two PHC segments: general medicine, and health care of infants and preschool children. Reports from these two PHC services served as the source of data to determine the proportion of urogenital system morbidity in the overall morbidity. Analysis of the rate of urogenital infections during the 2000-2006 period revealed their proportion in the overall morbidity to be on a steady increase (from 5.9% in 2000 to 6.4% in 2006). As comparison of absolute numbers would not be appropriate due to changes in the population size, the proportion of these diseases in the overall morbidity was determined. The group of urogenital infections showed a predominance of cystitis, which accounted for a half of all urogenital diseases. The rate of urogenital diseases has been on an increase. Therefore, attention should be focused on preventive measures, including behavior modification, with special reference to sexual activity, and antimicrobial prophylaxis in women with two or more episodes of cystitis within a six-month period. Prompt and comprehensive treatment of urogenital infections is of utmost importance for prevention of subsequent complications. Some of these diseases can take a very severe course, thus they should be properly treated to avoid their potential exacerbations.
