The impact of imipenem consumption on resistance rates
Imipenem consumption and resistance rates of Gram-negative pathogenes to imipenem were monitored in the period of 2 years. The monitoring was conducted in intensive care units in 10 hospitals. Imipenem consumption was expressed in Defined Daily Doses (DDD) and the resistance rate was monitored in all Gram-negative bacteria, especially in Pseudomonas aerugionsa. The results obrained in the period from 1998 to 2000 show no detecttable correlation between antibiotic consumption and resistance occurrence, meaning there was no direct impact of imipenem consumption on resistance manifestation. During imipenem administration a special attention was given to indications, dosage and treatment duration. Conclusion: If proper therapy is implemented, meaning correct treatment duration and dosage, resistance rates need not increase.
