The Center for Visual Studies in Zagreb began operating in June 2006. At the time we had a very imprecise idea on our recipients, that is, the actual audience. Gradually another question arose: do we need to strengthen the institution or work towards defining the actual profession, by positioning it through university programs, scientific initiatives, ad hoc projects and similar agendas. I can testify that the strengthening of visual studies as an institutional practice meets much bigger resistance than its research methods and aims. I tried to explain this in a following manner: a scientific institute pursuing visual culture issues would cast doubts on the existent value systems to a much higher degree. Let me put it this way: the legitimate deconstruction of ruling paradigms is much more dangerous than the particular and periodic studies of any phenomena, whatsoever. It is for this reason that Zagreb Center for Visual Studies gained bigger recognition for its scholarly, publishing and educational initiatives, in comparison to acquiring however little solid or long-term perspective of the institution's future life.
