Determination of metal ions in textile materials for children toys
Safety of products, including the ones made of textiles, is extremely important in all member states of the European Union. Special attention should be paid to children’s clothes and especially toys that need to be safe for daily use. Products like that are often made from a array of different textile materials of different origins (natural materials, synthetic, mixtures), and are often processed with agents that contain metal ions. Some of metal ions have been proven harmful and toxic, so the concern about the health risks of such children toys is understandable. Special attention should be given to potential leaching of metal ions during the use of those toys, especially their extraction in saliva or gastric fluid. This paper presents potential migration of ions of barium (Ba), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr) and lead (Pb), from a sample of textile material which is a part of children's stuffed toys, using the norm EN 71-3:2003. Emphasis of this work in on the preparation of the sample for the analysis as there is a large variety of textile materials from which the toys can be made. The contents of the above metal are determined by the ICP-OES method and preliminary results indicate that the metal ions migrate from the analyzed sample of textile material intended for preparation of children's stuffed toys.
