Chronic Neuropathic Nonodontogenic Orofacial Pain and Depression- impact on the Quality of Life

The study investigated 100 patients aged 18-75 with a clinical diagnosis of chronic neuropathic nonodontogenic OFP suffered for at least 6 months (72 women and 28 men) and 119 healthy subjects (73 women and 46 men) as a control group. A standardized diagnostic protocol was applied: 1) demographic data ; 2) evaluation of presence of neuropatic pain measured by Leeds assessment of neuropathic signs and symptoms (LANSS) ; 3) evaluation of emotional status using the Beck Depression Inventory II ; 4) assessment of health- related quality of life using SF-36 questionnaire. Results: Average LANNS score for the patients was 17.18, while for the control group was 0. The average BDI II score in the group of patients was 18.31 versus 5.87 in the control group. For each of the nine categories of the quality of life measured by SF-36, Mann-Whitney U test demonstrated statistically significant difference between the patients and the healthy control. In all categories except one (vitality) control group has a higher index that exceeds 60%. The average score of the control group is higher or equal to 60% in seven of the nine categories, while the group of patients does not exceed the limit of 60% in any of the categories. Conclusion: Chronic neuropathic nonodontogenic OFP affects almost all determinants of patient’s quality of life.
