A Study of Functional Elements for Designing Protective Clothing and Uniforms

Uniforms directly or indirectly accompany all aspects of our lives, in various institutions and organizations with uniformed staff. The specific requirements on protective properties significantly differentiate professional clothes from everyday clothing. Aesthetic design can affect the success or failure of a clothing system. Protective clothing must meet strictly defined functional demands and regulatory standards for specific industries and category of hazards the wearer will be exposed to. There are many requirements that a designer should be aware when designing protective clothes and uniforms. The paper presents an overview of the most important functional elements in clothing, which are applied in different combinations and shapes when designing the uniforms and protective clothing. Six different functional clothing elements in terms of ergonomic requirements, size and positioning in the design, use, types and kind of garments with regard to the use and complexity of design were analyzed. Based on the performed analysis of functional elements and through their variation and modeling of the basic pattern an author's collection of uniforms was designed and the author's proposal for a jacket of the mountain rescue service.
