Customized Consumption Feedback and Energy Related Behavioural Changes in Low-Income Households

Smart Metering and available consumption feedback systems can be used as applicable technology encouraging end-use energy efficiency in residential sector. Many studies have demonstrated positive influence of the socially contextualized feedback on households’ energy consumption but not many were dealing with the specifics of low-income households. This paper evaluates the impact of customized consumption feedback on energy behaviour patterns and energy savings in low-income households where additional energy efficiency measures have been introduced. The experimentation process has been accompanied by awareness campaign with emphasis on the proper understanding of the consumption feedback provided to low-income households. Feedback actions have been customized to tackle recognised needs of each specific target household, considering social aspects and dwelling typology. Obtained results clearly confirmed importance of customized information and precise selection of efficiency indicators for specific household groups with a potential to activate awareness of established habits and their relevance to energy behaviour.
