Parents' Attitudes towards Language Acquisition in Bilingual Children
The aim of this thesis is to give insight into the phenomenon of bilingual language development from the point of view of the parents who raised bilingual children. Aside from the theoretical standpoint, which deals with questions such as what bilingual first language acquisition is, how a child acquires languages, etc., the thesis also contains a questionnaire in which the parents of bilingual children shared their experience and thus facilitated the understanding of bilingualism. Multiculturalism and more specifically, bilingualism are complex subjects which are not easily explained, so through this research, readers will hopefully develop a better understanding of the complex situation parents find themselves in when raising bilingual children. Bilingualism is found throughout the world and it has become a very popular method of raising children, not only among parents who are native speakers of two different languages, but also among monolingual parents who are fluent in foreign languages and thus raise their children in a bi- or multilingual environment.
