DNA damage determination in gills of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis Lam. (Mollusca: Bivalvia) by Fast Micromethod
Fast MicromethodŽ was applied in the determination of DNA damage as strand breaks, alkali-labile sites and incomplete excision repair in cell suspensions or tissue homogenates in single microplates. The chemical xenobiotics (NQO; 4-nitroquinoline-N-oxide and bleomycin; Bleomycin-Fe(II) complex) and different doses of (-rays, generated by Cs137, were used to induce DNA damage in native DNA from cotton-spiner Holothuria tubulosa, marine sponge Suberites domuncula cells and mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis gills. The method was used in the Adriatic Sea monitoring program to detect the effect of mixed marine pollutants on DNA integrity in the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis gill tissue.
