Architecture of Historicism and Art Nouveau in Mostar

After the Congress of Berlin (13 June - 13 July 1878) was placed under Austro-Hungarian occupation. This decision was a turning point in the history of this country in many ways. It reflected on the economy and infrastructure but also on the cultural development and educational system. Western imports found a fertile ground in this environment that embraced new residents and their lifestyle. The latter reflected on the urbanism and architecture of Bosnian regional centres and intervolved with their oriental distinctions. Mostar was one of the regional centres and reflected the contextual and cultural policies that affected stylistic patterns in architecture. The new government tried to demonstrate affirmative attitude towards cultural autonomy and traditional heritage of their new colony. Historicist persistence on morphological references to the genius loci and the quest for national styles in the 19th century throughout Europe are fruitful for consideration of further development of Bosnian architectural theory and practice. During only 40 years of Austro-Hungarian rule in Bosnia and Herzegovina, intense and widespread building activity and transformations in urban planning were governed by the Architectural department of the Territorial Government in Sarajevo. Import of historical styles was enabled by employing architects mainly educated at prestigious colleges and technical schools throughout the Monarchy. The appearance and evolution of stylistic patterns in architecture of Mostar at the turn of the century are interlinked with some of the regional specifics, but also with the policies of Austro-Hungarian government. These lines of continuity include specific manifestations of secession in the public and residential architecture.
