History and Ideology in the Works of Šibenik Goldsmith and Engraver Horatio Fortezza
Fortezza's washbasins and ewers are a manifestation of the political and ideological strategy generated by the socio-historical atmosphere of the Ottoman invasions and military insecurity in the period from 1552 to the time of conclusion of the armistice at the end of the War of Cyprus. The analysis of their iconography from the position of historical imagology makes both the sources of the Fortezza's combinations of ancient motives and the visualization strategies of ideological positions of his Venetian clients clearer to us. Analyzed through our ('colonial') perspective his ewers and washbasins testify of the contemporary imperial ideas of his Venetian clients, their self-perceptions, and their perceptions of "our" i.e. Illyrian identity.
