Compression intestinal anastomosis: Croatian experience.

The aim of the study was to demonstrate the results obtalned by the novel surgical technique and possible advantages of compression Intestinal anastomosis over the other dechniques In this multicentric retrospective study oonducted in Croatia, results of 329 intestinal anastomoses with blofragmentable Valtrac ring psrformed in 319 patients, mean age 64 1 years, were analyzed. Out of 319 patients, 193 (60, 5%) were operated on for colon cancer 29 (9.09%) for gastrlc carcinoma, 29 (9, 09%) for lleus of various etiologies 19 (5 96%) for Crohn's disease, and 49 for other diseases, Seventy-four anastomoses were created in the upper segment, and 255 in the lovver segment of the digestive tract. Valtrac ring no 28 was used in 40.73%, no. 31 in 28.27%, no. 25 In 20.36%, and no. 34 in 10.64% of cases Postoperative compllcations, recorded in 18 (5.47%) patients, included ileus in two (0 6%) and anastomosis dehiscence in 16 (4, 83%) patients. Fifteeen (4.7%) patients were reoperated on. The rate of postoperative mortality was 6.9% (n=22). Six (1 88%) deaths were caused by anastomosis complications. Study results show that the use of biofragmentable Valtrac ring for the creation of intestinal anastomosis successfully compete with other technigues.
