Presence of sibutramine in herbal dietary supplements determined by validated high-pressure liquid chromatography-electrospray tandem mass spectrometry
Overweight and obesity might be classified as civilization disease. So many people try to solve their problems with a natural and ease solutions useing traditional far-east medicines like herbal infusions (teas or coffe) and variety of “herbal” preparations. We studyed those herbal dietary supplements (tee, coffe, chocolate, capsules and all kind of syrups) purchasted from Croatian market on sibutramine content. Sibutramine was withdrawn from the market due to an associated risk of serious cardiovascular events such as nonfatal heart attack and nonfatal stroke.Sibutramine was determined by high-pressure liquid chromatography-electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS-MS). The study showed that more then 25 % of these „healthy and harmless“ products are contaminated or replaced with active supstance sibutramine which was withdrawn from the market due to an associated risk of serious cardiovascular events such as nonfatal heart attack and nonfatal stroke. In that way the question is if herbal medicines can be taken safely without doctors’ control.
