Neurological and psychological recovery after war craniocerebral injury
Our analysis presents 50 of 81 patients with craniocerebral trauma treated at University Hospital in Osijek, suatained in Croatia Defence War, in the period between, 1991-1992, with a control neurological and neuropsychological examination in year 1998. Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) value at the moment of hospitalization was 9 ; Abbreviated Injura Score (AIS) for craniocerebral injury was 3, 7. We have additionally analyzed and described state of consciousness upon the arrival hospital. After admission all patients had CT brain examination besides a careful general and neurological examination besides continously followed up after primary neurosurgical treatment, repeated during hospitalization and state with rahabilitation in the intensive care. Results of neuropychological evaluation pointed out a sign of the posttraumatic encephalophaty syndrome in 19 patients, impaired of adaptive behavior 7, minor cognitive impairment 4, decrease intellectual and memory function 12 and 8 without any psychological deficit. In order that the patients recover optimally, it is necessary that the psyscinas work as an team. We believe that such good results after craniocerebral injuries could be assigned to the relatively young age of injured, early diagnostic and neurosurgical treatment and early sistematic and continous neurologic and psychologic rehabilitation
