C-CO2 emissions from agricultural soils

The total amount of carbon in the soil at the global level is nearly three times higher than the one in the surface biomass. Soil has an important role as carbon dioxide source and accumulator in the ecosystem. In the Republic of Croatia energy production (73.3 %) and agriculture (11.7 %) have the greatest contribution in greenhouse gas emissions by sector. Man can have a crucial influence on the emission of CO2 from the soil and on CN ratio in the soil by proper agricultural soil management (tillage, fertilization, irrigation). Due to the lack of research and our own national data related to the topics of soil respiration, in the real agroclimatic conditions of Western Pannonian agricultural subregion in Croatia a field experiment was conducted. The goal of the study is to determine the quantity of C-CO2 that is emitted from the soil into the atmosphere, depending on different fertilization doses, vegetation, temperature and moisture content in the soil. The experiment consists of 10 treatments which differ in the applied nitrogen doses (from 0 up to 300 kg N/ ha) and soil type is drained lowland distric Stagnosols. The study area has typical temperate continental climate. Data analysis shows medium correlation (r = 0.43) of fertilization (0-300 kg N/ha) and the amount of emitted carbon flux (C-CO2) to the atmosphere during cultivation of winter wheat (sowing/harvesting=05.11.11./11.07.12.) and complete correlation (r = 0.91) of fertilization and the amount of emitted carbon flux C-CO2 during cultivation of maize (sowing/harvesting=02.05.13./08.10.13.).
