Sustainability of Cruise Ship Conference Tourism
Representing approximately 9% of global GDP in 2011 and growing, tourism is a major contributor of employment of highly localized nature. As opposed to shore-based tourism, cruise ship industry is more flexible in relocating its assets to areas of demand with significantly more ease. Sustainable cruising tourism still faces several issues ; waste water and solid waste disposal, impact on marine eco- systems. Major areas of cruise line industry are also the areas of largest biodiversity found in the Earth’s oceans. Two of the most prominent areas are the Caribbean and Mediterranean. The question is whether increasing the activity of cruise liners in the most sensitive areas is a reasonable and sustainable action to do? The paper presents a range of methods to mitigate the impact of cruise liners on local marine eco-system and economy and maximise the positive externalities of the activities for local communities. Results are presented on a test-case comprising a round-trip cruise of Adriatic and Aegean Sea versus organising similar activities on the shore.
