Measurement of groundwater temperature for determination karst aquifer characteristic
Monitoring and the analyses of water temperature in karst provide answers to numerous questions related to water circulation, its origin, time of retention in the underground etc. In karst, there are favorable conditions for application of geothermal investigations because the existence and functioning of karst conduits through which groundwater is transported causes temperature anomalies that can be observed even on the ground surface. Two examples of simultaneous measurements and analyses of water temperature in natural and artificial lakes as well as vertical groundwater temperature profiles in piezometers drilled through the surrounding karst massif are described in detail. The example of natural lake refers to the Vrana Lake on the island of Cres whereas the example of an artificial lake refers to the reservoir of the Salakovac hydropower plant built on the Neretva River.
