An Antecedent to Vienna: Osijek German Stage from 1866 to 1907
The paper presents the results of a new intercultural and intertextual research of archival and museal data pertaining to the performances of plays by Ludwig Anzengruber, Gerhart Hauptmann, Friedrich Schiller and William Shakespeare on the German-speaking stage of Osijek's Upper Town Theater from 1866 to 1907. While so doing, it factographically circumstantiates a thesis that the dramatizations of works by the aforementioned playwrights and the guest appearances of thespians of numerous histrionic troupes visiting the old Essegg should also be observed as a sort of an antecedent to their subsequent stardom in the Viennese theatrical life.
