Virtual world: the world of fear or world without fear?
A significant level of fear of ICT is present in general public. This fear is not without grounds since most dangers people fear are based on facts. However, similar dangers are present in “lower” technologies we use daily without even thinking about them: locks, hand writings and signatures, etc. We feel less fear of traditional technologies because we are accustomed to them, have the feeling that we understand them and that we control the risk. The way to reduce the fear from ICT is to learn about its properties and consequences of its use, as well as to master tools and behavior to reduce the risk and to resolve problems when they arise. ICT also enables individuals to join forces in detecting and fighting risk and danger.
