Security Aspects of the RPL Protocol Implementation into IPv6-based Wireless Sensor Networks
The Internet of Things (IoT) represents the novel paradigm in the area of modern wireless telecommunications. It implies the ubiquitous network of various smart objects capable for wireless communication. IPv6-based wireless sensor networks (WSN) represent the important constituent part of the IoT. RPL protocol is the first and most important routing protocol suitable for the sensor network with IPv6 support. Security aspects of the RPL protocol implementation into IPv6-based WSN are very challenging, primarily due to constrained resources and lossy communication links. The paper analyses security aspects of the RPL routing protocol. The possible attack types are analysed and possible countermeasures are proposed. Possible architecture of intrusion detection system (IDS) for detection of RPL protocol compromisation is described.
