Minimization of Ship Radar Cross Section
The radar cross section (RCS) of a target depends highly on a target material and design. The practical problem is the difficulty of measuring the radar cross section of target in a laboratory. The purpose of this paper is to provide an estimation of ship RCS and its minimization using the numerical simulations. Various ship models are designed, investigated and compared in different environments. A combination of inclined and smooth surfaces is proposed for reducing RCS of the standard ship in HF band. The results show that is possible to achieve significantly reduced RCS at 12.5 MHz with the proposed design. Also, it is shown that ship RCS above sea surface is much higher than the ship RCS in free space which is useful in commercial applications.
