Real time P-wave detection in surface ECG
P-wave is generally the hardest ECG wave to detect. The real-time P-wave detection system presented in this article is based on the idea to use a separate non-real time search-back P-wave detection process and perform the real-time analysis based on statistical data on P-waves collected by that process. The discrete dyadic biorthogonal wavelet transform is used to transform the signal and prepare it for further processing. The detection was done on the 3rd and 4th scale of that transform. The detection system was tested on selected signals from the MIT arrhythmia database. For signals that are close to the normal ECG, the results are good (up to only 2.8% of false detections). If the signal has a lot of unusually shaped waves the detection rate dete-riorates but can still be considered acceptable.
