Project “Jaspper” Croatian and Montenegrin Cooperation for the Protection of Marine Environment.

Croatian and Montenegrin joint actions for the protection of maritime environment within EU/IPA project ”Joint Actions for Sea Pollution Prevention – JASPPer” is EU/IPA project of cross-border cooperation between Croatia and Montenegro with the total value of 598.340 EUR. Croatian partners in the project are Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia (Split) and University of Dubrovnik – Institute for Marine and Coastal Research. Montenegrin partners are Hydrometeorological and Seismological Service of Montenegro (Podgorica) and University of Montenegro – Institute of Marine Biology, Kotor. Location for the project activities is coastal/littoral and maritime region in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County (Konavle) and Montenegro (Herceg Novi, Kotor and Tivat). General objective of the project is to contribute towards reducing the cross-border pollution and preserving the marine ecosystem in coastal areas of Dubrovnik and Montenegro. In this paper oceanographic research and hydrographic survey around the two outfalls will be described. For that purpose the project teams of Croatian and Montenegrin researchers will conduct separate and joint analysis of the quality of sea water exposed to wastewater outfalls in Trašte Bay in Montenegro and in front of the town Cavtat in Croatia. The teams will also examine the physical state of the outfall pipes and the surrounding part of the seabed (in order to establish whether there are physical damages of the outfall pipes, which can be damaged by ships’ anchors). Hydrographic survey of the seabed around the two outfalls and sampling of the sea water for oceanographic research will result in description of the physical, chemical, geological, microbiological and biological characteristics of the sea water in inspected area during and after tourist season in order to monitor the sea water quality in relation to tourist season and other seasonal changes. Sea currents in the cross-border area are also going to be measured (speed and direction) in order to make conclusions on the cross-border traffic of pollutants - effects that the outfalls have across the border.
