The O’Rourke droplet collision model for the Euler-Eulerian framework

Diesel engines are being increasingly used in the transportation sector due to their high fuel efficiency. The overall engine performance is highly influenced by the fuel atomization process commonly called the spray process. It includes the primary disintegration of the liquid jet, subsequent droplet formation and finally the droplet collision. All of these processes influence the droplet surface area, and thus influence the engine performance. There are different approaches for modeling the spray process, for instance: the Euler- Lagrangian and the Euler-Eulerian approach. The first one is commonly being used in the engineering applications, but it has some disadvantages, especially in the dense spray region where the Euler-Eulerian approach performs better. The aim of this work was to enhance a collision model within the Euler- Eulerian framework. Therefore the O’Rourke collision model [2] was implemented in the commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code FIRE. By using this approach the collision process was calculated for defined collision interfaces. The model was verified on a case with two colliding droplet jets and the validation is planned to be conducted comparing to the available experimental data.
