Energy Efficient Hash Algorithm Implementations
Password hashing algorithms are designed to be resistant to brute force attacks and to provide satisfying level of protection. Bcrypt is one of password hashing algorithms based on the Blowfish block cipher and designed to be resistant to rute force attacks and to remain secure despite of hardware improvements. Although hardware unfriendly, some low-cost and energy efficient platforms are a perfect fit for properties of bcrypt such as expensive key schedule with user-defined cost setting, random 32-bit lookups and 4 KB of local memory per instance. These low-cost and energy efficient platforms exploit peculiarities of bcrypt to achieve comparable performance and much better energy efficiency when compared to traditional CPU implementations. These platforms are many-core processor architectures and reconfigurable logic.
