Analysis of smartphone traffic profiles for improving energy-efficiency of cellular networks

In the last decade, we can witness to the large growth and development of smartphone technology. Smartphone devices became significant consumers of the energy and network resources. Hence, motivation for this work is to find a way for smartphone devices to use less energy than nowadays and to give contribution for building energy-efficient cellular networks. Topic of this master thesis is analysis of smartphone traffic profiles for improving energy-efficiency of cellular networks. In order to derive statistical profiles for high energy efficient wireless cellular networks, in this master thesis, we have investigated and analyzed traffic profiles of the most frequently used smartphone applications. Statistical profiles are fundamental in design of smart algorithms dedicated to energy-efficient management of base station resources. This is because statistical profiles enable prediction of active/idle periods in user traffic, what enables micro-sleep of base stations through its switching on or off during different traffic activity periods. Investigation of traffic was done on three smartphones with operating systems (iOs, Android and Windows Phone) having highest market share and for three very popular applications (Youtube, Gmail and Facebook). Analyzed traffic patterns were used to make statistical profiles and for building a simulator for traffic generation. In order to check when base stations can be switched on or off, we were investigating different durations of base station sleep states with corresponding power consumptions, in order to see which sleep state duration is best for future practical implementations. Different types of algorithms for performing comparison between smartphones and corresponding applications for different base station sleep state durations were developed. Obtained results in terms of improving energy efficiency of cellular networks through microsleep of macro base stations have been presented and discussed.
