Rehabilitation of war traumatic brain injuries: a late outcome
A late outcome (post-rehabilitation) in 170 wounded with war traumatic brain injuries (TBI) during a Croatian Homeland War (1991-195) was analyzed. According to GOS, Barthel index and Rancho Scale, the long-term outcome in patients with war TBI was successful, better in closed- head trauma group. A rehabilitation took shorter period in closed-head then in penetrating head trauma group. The type of surgical treatment did not have any influence on short-term or a long-term outcome.A late posttraumatic epilepsy showed to be a major neurological complication, with higher incidence in penetrating head trauma group. An urgent rehabilitation with intensive medical and social follow-up of the patients with war TBI emerges, with an aim of preventing complications and evaluating rehabilitation needs.
