Relations between Working Age of Engine Drivers and Subjective Disturbances caused by Diesel Traction Noise
Previous research has confirmed that Diesel locomotive cab is subjectively the noisiest engine driver working environment. Moreover, a significant part of subjective feeling of disturbance from cognitive perception of engine drivers is further expressed in Diesel traction compared to electric traction. Input data were collected by surveying random sample of 44 male engine drivers which are exclusively or predominantly serving Diesel-type traction. The correlations of the respondent’s subjective ratings to the auditory effect of noise ; TTS and tinnitus as well as the symptoms of vibroacoustic disease in relation to exposure time defined by the working age of respondents have also been studied. The paper presents the subjective assessment of the respondents’ own state of hearing impairment, the effect of different noise sources in the Diesel locomotives, Diesel shunting locomotives or Diesel motor compositions, along with the subjective impression of speech intelligibility between interlocutors within the engine cab. Prolonged exposure to high intensity noise can result in strong psychological and physiological effects and hearing loss, which can increase driver's workload.
