The Influence of Local Factors on Crevice Corrosion of Stainless Steel in Seawater
The influence of local factors on the susceptibility to crevice corrosion of stainless steel UNS S31600 in the seawater has been investigated by the electrochemical methods on the location in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The occurence of crevice damages observed in the natural seawater were compared to those detected in biological inert seawater obtained by treatment at elevated temperature. The increased corrosion process in the presence of micro bio species, being mainly recognized as phytoplancton, has been attributed to the increase of the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction stimulating crevice formation in the seawater.
