Crevice Corrosion of Stainless Steel in Seawater
There is a general agreement that the main corrosion risk in practical application of stainless steel and other passive alloys in the seawater is localised corroion, pitting and crevice corrosion. In the present work results of a new test method used, to illustrate factors influencing crevice corrosion of stainless steel and the other passive materials in in sewater were demonstrated. The mechanism of crevice corrosion formation has been discussed and explained in details. The role of steels type, the influence of chloride and the other ions, temperature, redox potential, oxide concentration, and the presence of micro bio specis on the rate of corrosion was demonstrated.
