Incidence of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus species on commercial dairy farm before and after using pre-milking disinfection (2010-2014)

Incidence of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus species on commercial dairy farm was observed before and after using pre-milking disinfection during five year period. In the year 2010 with no pre-milking disinfection applied in milking routine, we found 225 quarters positive out of 484 total sampled during random milk bacteriology sampling. 155 quarters were positive for Staphylococcus aureus, and 32 for Streptococcus species. After the implementation of pre-milking disinfection in everyday milking routine, quarters positive for Staphylococcus aureus decreased drastically. We found only 23 Staphylococcus aureus positive quarters out of 113 positive in total of 492 samples in year 2013. Streptococcus species decreased more than 50% after the implementation of pre-milking disinfection but remained at almost the same level during the next few years. In year 2014 owner decided to switch from commercial chemical based disinfectant to natural home-made product. First bacteriological findings few months later showed increase in Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus species positive quarters. Based on the results of our study pre-milking disinfection is of crucial importance for elimination of contagious mastitis causing pathogens from the herd. Home-made disinfectant based on natural pine tree needles proved to be ineffective against contagious or environmental pathogens.
