Analysis of the maximum discharge of karst springs
The paper presents analyses of the phenomenon of limited outflow discharge observed in some karst springs. An extensive number of studied examples shows that, under the conditions of extremely intense precipitation, there is an upper limiting value to the outflow discharge of the main spring exit, independent of catchment size and the amount of precipitation. In order to explain this phenomenon, a theoretical model of the mechanism of water drainage from the karst springs is introduced. A detailed examination of four practical examples follows. Further, the following possible reasons for the occurrence of the phenomenon are established: 1) Limited dimensions of the karst conduit; 2) Pressure flow; 3) Intercatchment overflow; 4) Overflow from main spring to a number of temporary springs; 5) Water storage in subsurface or epikarstic zone. It is pointed out that the existence of the limited maximum discharge capacity is not included into rainfall-runoff process modelling, reflecting on the poor quality of karst hydrological modelling.
