Modern challenges in the use of information and communication technologies and encouraging divergent thinking in preschool children

Sophisticated technological toys, smartphones, tablets and computers are being used by ever younger generations of children. New technology is increasingly customized to children’s “virtual“ needs, introducing them hurriedly to an endless world of virtuality where everything is possible - right away! Negative aspects of using technology based on numerous studies indicate a premature and often inappropriate use of information and communication technologies not only in family surroundings but also in education. This paper brings guidelines as to how information and communication technologies can be used as well as alternative learning and teaching methods that encourage divergent thinking in preschool children. Evidence shows that 75 percent of synapses are formed until age 7, thus providing potential for further growth and development. Most preschool children have a high level of divergent thinking that later on decreases and indicates the necessity of introducing changes into family and educational surroundings. Systematic introduction of changes should focus on maintaining cognitive processes and encouraging divergent thinking in children.
