Chirality of Achiral in Liquid Crystals: Molecular Packing in the Controversial Nx Phase
There is a growing attention for the recently discovered Nx liquid-crystalline phase, having a curious property that the chiral macroscopic structure is composed of organic molecules without the center of chirality. Due to the rather limited number of compounds known to exhibit the Nx phase, majority of the studies are typically performed on several derivatives of cyanobiphenyl possesing methylene linkage group. Herein, some novel compounds with imino linkage group are presented. Experimental data is accompanied by DFT study to identify the key structural features required for the formation of the phase. Packing model is proposed based on molecular interactions determined by liquid state NMR spectroscopy. It is a first application for study of intermolecular interactions within the liquid crystal state.
