On Measures to Avoid a Future Risk for Rich Alluvial Aquifers in Croatia
Croatia is a small southern European country, comprising the area of only 56, 538 km2. But from a hydrogeological and even water management aspect, this country is composed of two regions having almost equally large area - the northern and southern Croatia. The northern Croatia, that is matter of this paper, is a soutwestern part of the Pannonian basin and this region dominates over a large lowland along two magistral Danube tributaries - the river Sava and Drava and their major tributaries as well as along the river Danube at the eastmost part of the region. Quaternary sediments form a thick and very permeable aquifers within that lowland. The paper presents a rewiew of extractable groundwater quantities in the Quternary aquifers of northern Croatia, of their actual and potential use, of their present and possible pollution, as well as of their present and future measures for avoiding their serious risk.
