Preparation and characterization of biodegradable polycaprolactone/ titanate nanotubes composites
The objective of this study was modification of biodegradable polycaprolactone with TiO2 nanotubes as filler in the purpose to improve processing and /or other desired properties. Composites of biodegradable PCL with 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 wt. % titanate nanotubes were prepared by melt mixing using a laboratory Brabender mixer. Final specimens for all investigations (size 40 mm x 12mm x 1.5 mm) were obtained by compression molding the materials in a hot-plate of a laboratory hydraulic press Dake Model 44-226 at 140°C. TiNT was prepared by hydrothermal synthesis from nano TiO2 particles and dried TiNT nanopowder was employed in preparation of PCL/TiNT composites. The effects of TiNT on the thermal properties (DSC), viscoelastic properties (DMA) and morphology (SEM, LM) were studied. From DSC results, Tm slightly increased, Tc increased while crystallinity (c) decreased with TiNT content in compare with neat PCL. DMA measurements show that the Tg and storage modulus increased in PCL/TiNT composites. SEM and LM results showed that the aggregates were formed.
