Criteria and indicators for typology of tourist destinations in Croatia
Typologies of tourist destinations vary from one country to another. It is important to emphasize that there are no universal criteria for determining typologies of tourism development and forming regions. Each country defines tourism regions according to its own criteria. Since last full-scale geographic regionalisation of Croatia in relation to tourism was made more than 20 years ago, and in the meantime geographical approach to the principles and methods of regionalisation has changed significantly, as well as the socio-economic context of tourism and regional development in Croatia, defining new geographic regionalisation in relation to tourism is very up-to-date and necessary object of the scientific research, both on the theoretical and applicative level. Previous attempts of typology were based on the cohesion of tourism development within regions using several indicators on tourism turnover. Purpose of this research is to establish more comprehensive set of criteria and indicators for typology of tourist destinations in Croatia that should be a background to create organisational and legislation framework for better integration of homogenous spatial units in Croatian tourism and, eventually, to form more convenient and rational system of tourist boards on the regional and local level, in the context of the admission of Croatia to the EU. Suggested set of criteria and indicators could include next components: a) criterion related to features and development trends of tourism turnover - probable indicators: number of tourist arrivals, number of overnight stays, composition of tourist arrivals/overnight stays according to the emissive tourist area, months in the year, average stay etc. b) criterion related to features and development trends of accommodation capacities - probable indicators: total number of accommodation capacities, structure of accommodation capacities according to the division on elementary and complementary capacities, according to the working period during the year and according to the category, share of elementary accommodation capacities, total number of tourist beds, structure of tourist beds according to the type and category of the accommodation capacities, offer of capacities for rent (rooms, apartments, holiday homes), number of second homes as potential accommodation capacities etc. c) criterion related to the level of tourism development in an area - probable indicator: coefficient of tourism functionality as an indicator of physical and social saturation of an area by tourism etc. d) criterion related to the contribution of tourism in the economic structure - probable indicator: share of tourism in the GDP of a tourist place etc. e) criterion related to the participation of tourism in the socio-economic composition of the population - probable indicators: share of the population employed in tourism, ratio of employees in tourism and other economic activities etc. Criteria and indicators mentioned above will be designed for typology of tourist destinations on different spatial levels as a basis of new tourism regionalisation of Croatia.
