LEONARDO DA VINCI PARTNERSHIP PROJECT ENHANCING HOSPITAL LABORATORY STANDARDS FOR CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: A QUALITY IMPROVEMENT TOOLKIT
BACKGROUND: Continuing professional development (CPD) is of the utmost importance to biomedical scientists for maintaining their professional recognition. A project entitled ‘Enhancing Hospital Laboratory Standards for CPD: A Quality Improvement Toolkit’ (abbreviation: Enhance It) within the framework of the Lifelong Learning Programme is a small-scale co-operation project between organizations working in the field of vocational education and training (UK, Malta, Czech Republic, Hungary and Croatia). The aim of this partnership is to share and develop good practice in CPD for biomedical scientists and from this to collaboratively develop an EU-toolkit for delivery of high quality CPD development activities provided by European hospital laboratories. METHODS: Partner organizations work together with each partner contributing to all five of the objectives: 1. identify core elements of good practice by the comparison of approaches to CPD used within partner organizations and countries, 2. define harmonised European quality standards and criteria for accreditation and evaluation of local hospital CPD activities, 3. develop a framework for inclusion of reflective practice in CPD activities, 4. produce guidelines for European hospital laboratories on managing and organising CPD 5. provision on a new European hospitals CPD providers Community of Practice network. RESULTS: Co-operation has resulted in a clearly defined distribution of tasks where each partner is able to maximise their contribution to the learning partnership based on their particular area of competence. 18 participants representing 5 partner organizations met on the 1st transnational meeting in Wolverhampton, UK, compared the approaches to CPD and identified core elements of good practice (objective 1): lecture, guided tour, reflective learning, discussion, test, case study, broad relevance, clear objective, active involvement, feedback, mind map, cycle of learning, various media accessibility. CONCLUSIONS: CPD is imperative for biomedical scientists to maintain competence to practice thus supporting quality service delivery. Harmonization of CPD within Europe is needed to underpin mobility of biomedical scientists and to ensure excellence in provision of EU-patient laboratory test results.
