The Effect of Copper Pigments on Conservation State of Cultural Heritage Materials Held by Libraries
This paper discusses the destruction of cultural heritage materials catalysed by copper ions originating from the green and blue pigments which have been used in historical artefacts. Destructive effect of copper pigments is a major problem for institutions that keep and preserve these works. The degree of damage can range from changing colours of painted area to total destruction paint layers and substrates (paper, parchment). In order to assess the state of conservation it is necessary to know the properties, ways of production and degradation of copper pigments, and their ability to react with other constituents of artefact.
