Self-evaluation of freshmen's health issues at the Faculty of humanities and social sciences in Zagreb-Croatia

Based on the Bologna principles, Croatian study programs follow the contemporary European trends of higher education. This signifies the increase in demands and difficulties in fulfilling tasks, and thus the increasing threat to bio-psycho- affective conditions of freshmen during their studies. This paper investigates whether and to what extent freshmen have health problems. In the academic year of 2011./2012. a non-anonymous survey was conducted on a sample of 745 subjects, all of which were students at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb. The survey contained one variable and 20 subvariables. The sub variables referred to a subjective assessment of the subjects’ health condition. During self-evaluation the students used a five- level Likert’s scale from 1 (none) to 5 (very high). Collected data is analyzed by Statistica 7.0. The results indicate that the level of health problems of freshmen is increased in 5 variables: Eye Disease, Lack of Energy, Allergies, Insomnia, and Headaches and Migraines. The results indicate that there are indeed certain threats to the psychosomatic state of freshmen, which may be due to a sedentary lifestyle and work on computers5. These health risks can manifest themselves through unpleasant and harmful vision disorders, disturbances related to stress and fatigue, as well as burdening on the musculoskeletal system. Physical educational programs, the level of the teachers’ motivation and kinesiology curriculum play the leading role in the intervention in these situations.
