Sustainability on the semi-periphery: an impossible topic in a non-existent place

The aritcle surveys the material and social developmental constraints in the 21st century, with special emphasis on the development attainment and environmental impact of the countries of European semi-periphery. We survey the common global constraints on development practices, and position a selection of European countries by their development and environmental impact indices. The article provides a common framing for further theoretical and empirical contributions in the edited volume.
