Reference Intervals for some sheep blood parameters in organic production
Interpretation of any obtained value depends on the existence of relevant information with which we can compare it. This especially applies to the referent blood parameters which should be, according to the latest recommendations of the area experts, measured in a well- characterized population of the individuals selected according to predefined criteria such as age, sex, breed and diet. To make reference interval as reliable as possible, a chosen statistical method must provide an effective way of getting results from the sample population applicable for the entire population. This represents a special challenge for the organic sheep production in Croatia, primarily due to the peculiarities and differences of usually extensive farming and an insufficient number of animals in the herd that are mainly consisted of indigenous breeds. In addition, until recently, referent hematological and biochemical parameters of the Croatian indigenous sheep breeds were not determent at all regardless of the type of farming. In the literature we can find the referent blood values for foreign breeds of sheep, but in most cases the data on the rearing and breeding of animals are very poor, analytical methods are usually not specified at all, and the quality of statistical methods with which reference intervals were determined are of the questionable quality. Therefore, in this study the reference intervals of some hematological and biochemical blood parameters of the Cres sheep were determined by using different statistical methods. Most acceptable results were obtained with the robust method which gives results with satisfying ratio of confidence intervals and reference interval, and all that without requiring a large sample size.
